Sex addiction is a compulsive need to perform sexual acts in order to achieve the kind of 'fix' that an alcoholic gets from a drug. It is common but often not diagnosed.
The addiction may include a compulsive need to masturbate, view pornography, or be in sexually stimulating situations. His or Her ( yes,her!) Sexual appetite cannot be quenched and nothing can stand in the way of their trying to fulfill this need.
Symptoms
A person might have a sex addiction if he or she shows some or all of the following symptoms
- Chronic obsessive sexual thoughts and fantasies.
- Frequent relations with multiple partners including strangers
- Preoccupation with having sex even when it interferes with daily life.
- Putting oneself or others in danger due to sexual behaviour.
- Feeling remorse or guilt after sex.
Treatments
A lady came into the pharmacy one night looking for drugs to make her boyfriend sleep,on further inquires she revealed he loves sex a lot and that she is in pains and needed to sleep. I asked her to come with her boyfriend for counseling.
It's unrealistic to expect sex addicts not to have sex again but the goal of treatment should be to make them know the difference between healthy and non-healthy sexual behaviour.
- In-patients treatment program: Individuals are removed from their daily lives for at least 30 days to help them regain control of their impulses and start healing.
- Sex addicts anonymous: group meetings with other sex addicts for moral support.
- Medications: Drugs used to treat obsessive compulsive disorder or impulse control disorder may be used to curb the compulsive nature of sex addiction.

Sex addiction can occur in women,now in most cases there is usually an underlying problem,that they are usually trying to forget.some were sexually abused when they were small and they grow up feeling dejected,that they are only useful as sex toys. Treatments have been listed above but in Nigeria where we don't have good rehab centers,the church leaders can serve as support group and for the individuals to heal

ReplyDeleteMy question is that how can we address this issue when we have ethically induced mindset,religious fanaticism etc. Is this really an issue cause and what is the cause?
ReplyDeleteSexual Addiction is a big issue. Most sex addicts use sex to forget certain issues,for the pleasure they get. I will give example of my school days,there was a guy that was always masturbating every morning in front of the hostel,and he would make noise so you will turn to him.He might have started with just pornography, then masturbation alone in his room and he wanted more. He probably was not satisfied any longer, now what quality of life will he live? What about his family? The sex addicts that have multiple partners may end up contacting HIV or worse hepatitis. For a female unwanted pregnancy. So parents have a role to play to censor what their children watch and make sure they are not exposed to sexual activities too early either from TV or Internet or from abuse.
DeleteA lot of people have this but the society makes it seem normal in this clime where impotency amongst men is becoming a cause for concern. I doubt if this particular addiction ever becomes an issue in Nigeria!
ReplyDeleteIt is an issue. From research sex addicts don't mind sleeping with animals or children if they don't see a willing participant. We have heard of strange stories where father's sleep with their daughters,or a mature man that raped a girl of about three years. Sex addicts don't mind going to any length to ensure they are satisfied.
